Pop-up Chinese New Year Installations

The Development Bureau and the Harbourfront Commission are presenting “Fantastic 6@Victoria Harbourfront” which will feature pop-up Chinese New Year installations at six harbourfront sites starting from 13 January. Various local artists who created the characters “Nick the Robot”, “Chocolate Rain” and “Din Dong” have been invited to design the installations.With various New Year greeting messages as the themes, the artists have combined lighting, images, art and interactive games to create six unique harbourfront shared spaces dedicated to Chinese New Year as well as Valentine’s Day. The six harbourfront sites are the Belcher Bay Promenade in Kennedy Town; the HarbourChill in Wan Chai; the Water Sports and Recreation Precinct in Wan Chai; the Revitalised Typhoon Shelter Precinct in Causeway Bay; the East Coast Park Precinct in Fortress Hill; and the Tsuen Wan Promenade, sending good wishes to members of public on the festive occasions along the 8.7-kilometre-long connected promenades on Island North as well as the Tsuen Wan Promenade.

Each of the six harbourfront sites has its distinctive festive features. Designed to echo particular Chinese New Year themes, these features bring a refreshing and festive atmosphere to the Victoria harbourfront, the largest outdoor space in Hong Kong. In early February, the installations will be further transformed to celebrate the Valentine’s Day, thereby optimising resources while showcasing vitality and versatility of the harbourfront sites.

Belcher Bay Promenade in Kennedy Town, under the theme of “Jubilation” (喜氣洋洋)

At the Belcher Bay Promenade in Kennedy Town, local artist Orson Li, the creator of “Nick the Robot”, designed an array of recreational facilities based on the theme of “Jubilation”. They include a slide, a flying rope, telephone tubes and environmentally friendly carts upcycled from discarded tin cans.

HarbourChill in Wan Chai, under the theme of “Feeling Happy and Proud” (吐(兔)氣揚眉)


The HarbourChill in Wan Chai features the 9-metre-high LED Chinese Drum showing various images and styled on the theme of “Feeling Happy and Proud” (吐(兔)氣揚眉), with a pun in Cantonese and Mandarin on the word “rabbit” to mean feeling proud and happy in the Year of the Rabbit. Besides the drum, several rabbits are performing a lion dance on plum blossom piles to bring festive atmosphere to the HarbourChill. There is also a host of interactive devices and decorative elements on the site.

Water Sports and Recreation Precinct in in Wan Chai, under the theme “Well-fed and Well-clothed” (豐衣足食)

Under the theme of “Well-fed and Well-clothed”, Prudence Mak, the local illustrator behind the character “Chocolate Rain”, crafted a multitude of installations for the Water Sports and Recreation Precinct in Wan Chai. They include the Chocolate Rain 12 Chinese Zodiac Signs installation, the God of Wealth, a maneki-neko, and 3D installation relating to Chinese New Year foods.

Revitalised Typhoon Shelter Precinct in Causeway Bay, under the theme of “Favourable Weather” (風調雨順)

Under the theme of “Favourable Weather” (風調雨順), the Revitalised Typhoon Shelter Precinct in Causeway Bay presents a 15 metre-long Fire Dragon installation, lifted by a bunch of lovely rabbits and offering blessings to the members of public.

East Coast Park Precinct in Fortress Hill, under the theme of “Abundant Wealth” (金玉滿堂)

In the East Coast Park Precinct in Fortress Hill, bamboo, an environmentally friendly material, was used to create the 4 metre-high “Bamboo Wish” art installation under the theme of ”Abundant Wealth” (金玉滿堂). Each of the four sides of the installation carries a distinctive theme to wish Hong Kong people a year of abundance and wealth: “wealth” represented by bamboo; “luck” symbolised by kumquat; “popularity” denoted by a peach blossom tree; and “love” represented by roses.

Tsuen Wan Promenade, under the theme of “Great Success” (鯉躍龍門)

At the Tsuen Wan Promenade, local artist John Chan, the creator of the character Din Dong, crafted the “Din Dong Chinese New Year Parade” installation that instils vitality and festivity into the harbourfront site. The creation echoes the Chinese idiom “the carp jumps over the dragon gate” (鯉躍龍門), which denotes great success.
